If you live in bear country and are thinking of investing in “Bear-Proof Garbage Cans” I recommend checking out this video out shot in Boulder, Colorado to get an idea of their effectiveness.  It wasn’t brute force that gained entry into the trash can, if you look closely you can see the bear used her mouth to pinch the latch and open the lid.

Don’t really want to call out any one manufacturer of this type of trash can but they cost around $200 and aren’t worth 2 cents. If you really want to deter bears from getting into you kitchen scraps you need a real deal steel container that encloses over a traditional traditional can and those run between $800$1000.  That’s a lot of cheddar.
