WATCH: Boy Scout Rescues Couple and Injured Dog With Improvised Stretcher

A local couple embarked on a hike near Pearl City, Hawaii with their 100-pound dog Smokey. The hike, which was designed to be a two-mile loop, quickly went sideways after a navigational error. They ended up seven miles from their vehicle when Smokey’s paws started bleeding and he couldn’t walk.

Luckily, a 12-year-old Boy Scout named David King and his mother stumbled across the scene. The quick-thinking scout fashioned a primitive stretcher to rescue the injured dog. He used two lengths of thick tree branches as the outer frame. Then, he used a few tee-shirts and slid the tree branches through the arm openings to create a cradle. Smokey the dog got on the stretcher and they carried him out of the woods.

Two thumbs up for David. He came across a tough situation and used his experience to calmly and creatively develop a functional solution.
