The town of Tupper Lake, NY has expressed interest in leasing the old Big Tupper ski area. Ski Big Tupper has not operated since 1999. The mountain, located west of Lake Placid in New York State offers over 1,100 feet of vertical rise.

According to the Adirondack Daily Enterprise, the current ownership group had extensive plans to develop and revive the ski area in the early 2003s but gave up following legal battles and permitting issues. Franklin County, where Tupper Lake is located, is now trying to foreclose on the mountain due to years of unpaid taxes.

The town of Tupper lake has stepped in to express interest in leasing the property. Tupper Lake is interested in expanding the nordic ski trail network to the mountain, allowing mountain biking, and backcountry skiing. There are no plans to turn the lifts any time soon. Regardless, this could provide an excellent recreational opportunity for residents of the town and county.

As this lease would be paid with taxpayer money, there will need to be public hearings on the matter. There is also a liability aspect of this plan that could cause some wrinkles. Fingers crossed that Ski Big Tupper will see some (legal) backcountry skiing this winter.
