CAIC: looking up from the avalanche path

The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reports a skier was buried and killed in an avalanche near Jones Pass in the Front Range Thursday. The skier’s identity has not been released. This is CAIC’s preliminary report on the incident:

PRELIMINARY REPORT: On Thursday March 7, 2019 at 1:53 PM the Clear Creek County Sheriff’s Office was notified by radio of an avalanche on Jones Pass with people caught. One person was buried. He was located and transported to the trailhead. Emergency medical services from Clear Creek County transported the victim to the hospital, where he later succumb to his injuries.

Avalanche danger levels in Colorado remain at a historic high. Accessing the backcountry is incredibly dangerous and should not be attempted. Be safe, wait it out, don’t go into the backcountry right now.
