Pyeongchang 2018 Olympic Ski Venue Set To Be Demolished

The Alpine skiing venue used at the 2018 Olympic Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea could be demolished in order to restore the hillside to its previous natural state.

According to the Korea Times, a deal was struck with The Korea Forest Service, who owns Mount Gariwang, to allow for the building of the Jeongseon Alpine Centre as well as it’s operation between May 24, 2014 and December 31, 2018.

Under the conditions of the deal, the land needed to be restored after the Games.

Local officials, however, would like to see the ski runs remain as a way of attracting tourists to the area and for a possible bid for the 2021 Asian Winter Games.

Controversy surrounded the alpine centre has been around since its inception due largely to the fact that the area was covered with 500-year-old trees.
