Sunshine Village is shutting its doors and moving its guests to Banff for the second time in a month after the nearby Verdant Creek Fire got a second wind from you guessed it– hot and arid weather.

In their most recent update, officials with Parks Canada indicated that the fire is not currently a threat to the Sunshine Village community. Still, firefighters will need to utilize the resort as a staging area in order to fight this particularly stubborn wildfire.

“Warmer temperatures are forecast through the week and will continue to produce increased fire activity. Smoke columns will likely build in the afternoon, followed by settling into valley bottoms in the evening. This pattern is expected to continue while hot, dry conditions persist.” – Parks Canada

Right now the blaze has consumed some 12,500+ acres of forested terrain and firefighters aren’t stopping anytime soon as only a few scattered thunderstorms are currently in the forecast. In the meantime guests will be relocated to Banff while the closure remains in place.

Closed Areas:

*Smoke may affect visibility along highways through and adjacent to Banff and Kootenay national parks. Travellers should check Drive BC and AB 511 for up to date information.
