The last two weeks in the French Alps have seen non-stop precipitation. However, this past week, the storms extended west and south giving Italians, Austrians, and Swiss skiers and riders a taste of what they’ve been waiting for all December.

With storm totals exceeding 6 feet in places like Chamonix, the skiing has changed dramatically since desperate December, which left many with coreshots, injuries, and broken dreams of skiing deep snow in the alps. But all droughts, sooner or later, end in rain– or snow in this case.
And lot’s of it.
Yesterday, we ventured through the Mont Blanc tunnel to see what’s happening on the Italian side of Mont Blanc (or Monte Bianco if you’re of the Italian persuasion). What we found was waist deep powder turns all day under partly cloudy skies in what now seems to have been some of the best skiing this year in the alps. Although the upper mountains in many regions remain closed due to high avalanche danger, the lower mountain @Courmayeur served up the goods all day– at least until we stopped to drink Peroni’s and eat Pizza.

With more snow in the forecast along with what seems to be like the first bluebird day of the month on Monday, skiers and riders have gone from depressive sentiments to stoke levels that are bordering on manic. Either way, the season is shaping up in the alps.
