Vail just rolled out a new service that piggybacks on the technology used in the WAZE app giving skiers and snowboarders the option to avoid highly trafficked areas and cut down on lift line waits by accessing real time data via smartphones. By downloading the EpicMix app people can use their phones to make informed decisions to spend more time riding and less time waiting.

“We didn’t invent any of the technology ourselves — we just put it together in an innovative way,” said Jeremy Coleman, the company’s vice president of marketing technology. “It’s a real first for the skiing industry.”

What was once privileged information among locals, where the to ski when the mountain is swamped, may become common knowledge just like the time saving surface street shortcuts that WAZE application has been directing drivers through. Time will tell how this kind of service effects overall mountain experience. How do you see this kind of tech playing into your day?
