Today marks the official opening day of the 2014 ski season in Australia but the snow fields of Thredbo and Perisher are still grassy green. However, things could be turning around for the resorts down under. Weather forecasts show significant snowfalls expected within the next 10 days.
“The snow should fall as low as 1600 metres thanks to a southerly change bringing strong winds, but it should only bring a dusting to the peaks of the ranges” says Weatherzone meteorologist Rob Sharpe.
Mr Sharpe said the snow would melt away by Tuesday morning although next week is expected to bring ideal conditions for snow-making at the resorts.
“To make snow you need to have really cold nights where there are light winds and clear skies,” he said. ” Conditions are particularly good when there is a cold air mass in place behind a cold front – that’s exactly what we’ll have from early next week.”
