The POWDER ALERT is issued for a strong system that will pound theCascades Tuesday night and Wednesday. Strong winds (Lift closures likely), will be in full force on Wednesday with up to 15 inches of snowfall. Resorts favored by Westerly flow such as Crystalwill be favored. Snow levels will be around 4,000 feet early in the storm (Dense snow), with rain near the bases turning colder by late AM on Wednesday. Snow showers will continue (lighter density) from Wednesday PM through Thursday AM. Thursday will be my pick however snow density could be heavy with a high confidence of some dry on top (Snowing lightly and colder). Interior Washington near Spokane will see moderate snow from Wednesday evening through Thursday (6-9)..
Another deep storm is possible for next weekend with moderate snow levels especially near the Canadian border and Baker both Saturday and Sunday.
SIERRA:
The Sierra will start to see light snow by Tuesday afternoon with the bulk of moisture arriving after midnight through Wednesday afternoon. Snow levels will be very high initially (7,000 feet) and drop to around 5500 feet Wednesday. Expect amounts to be in the 8-12 inch range with perhaps higher amounts at the usual suspects like Kirkwood. This will be welcome moisture with the northern areas seeing the best chance of snowfall. Mammoth will see lower amounts.
ROCKIES:
The Sierra energy combined with the northern cold front coming down from Idaho will spread moderate snow into the Tetons, Wasatch, and Bozeman area by Wednesday night. This will bring peak snowfall into Thursday morning. At this point, the fast nature of the storm will keep amounts in the 4-10 inch range with Thursday being your best powder day. Colorado will see moderate snow on Thursday afternoon through Friday. The models show a large area of the State along I-70 into the Northern San Juan’s receiving the highest amounts. The Aspen area might be one to watch. Colorado might fare better than the Wasatch with higher elevations? Vail passcould also soak up some moisture not showing up on the latest model runs with NW flow. If I had to take some guesses on amounts I will go with 5-11 for many areas. More snow is likely next weekend in Colorado with NW flow and continued snow showers along the Divide, Vail Pass, and most areas in Northern Colorado (no guess on amounts yet).
NEW ENGLAND POWDER ALERT: Heavy snow will break out over southern New England on Tuesday. All mountain areas from Stowe to the Berkshires will see moderate to heavy amounts. The peak snowfall will be Tuesday evening and night favoring resorts from Killington throughWestern Maine (Sunday River), and southern New Hampshire. Expect 12 inches or more in many locations with Wednesday being the chase day! We heard that Whaleback Mountain is closing it’s doors after many years of operations. If they are still open, consider an evening chase if they still offer night skiing on Tuesday? Please let us know!
