Collin James Zak, a 23 year-old army service member and Ohio native died on Saturday at Monarch Mountain after he collided with a tree on the Mirage trail.
A report from the Montrose Daily Press indicates that the accident occurred just before noon and that the victim was wearing a helmet. Monarch Ski Patrol notified authorities after they discovered the unresponsive snowboarder. They were later joined by Chaffee County EMS and Sheriff’s Office personnel. Ski patrol performed CPR on the victim but those efforts proved unsuccessful. Zak was later pronounced dead on the scene.
