WATCH: Heavy Snow Leads To Early Season Avalanche Danger in Washington

KIRO 7 got to speak with Alan LaBissoniere of King County Search and Rescue and he simply wanted to get the word out that “It’s dangerous to be up there above the tree line.”

Because of the early arrival of heavy snow, avalanche danger has come much earlier to the area that in past years and people need to made aware of it.

LaBissoniere advised: “Anyone hiking or skiing in the back-country should never go alone, should leave information about location and return time with someone down the mountain so they can call 911, and should have survival gear and wear a transmitter.”

He and the King County Search and Rescue use The Northwest Avalanche Center’s mobile phone app that pinpoints location and clearly color codes avalanche danger by region.

“If you’re in a considerable, or red or black, don’t go. It’s not worth the risk.”
