Trans-Atlantic crossings are ripe with history. Since Christopher Columbus made what is largely considered the first modern crossing of the Atlantic, a series of pioneers have tried their hand at the route– some witnessing success while others were exposed to complete failure.

Back in 1932, Amelia Earhart became the first woman to cross the Atlantic via plane and shortly after was followed by Henri Beaudout, who crossed the Atlantic in 1956 on a non-motorized raft made solely from rope and wood. Now, world-class waterman and South African with a heart of gold, Chris Bertish is hoping to join that storied legacy of adventurers by becoming the first human to cross the Atlantic via stand up paddleboard without assistance.

“An undertaking so unique, so out-of-the-box, and of such an immense feat that most would believe it to be… Impossible!”TheSUPCrossing.com

Bertish, who plans to cross the Atlantic later this year, will use a one-of-a-kind SUP that looks more like a small sailboat than it does your minimalist paddle board. That said, he will being standing and he will be paddling– albeit with a tiny sleep compartment and navigation system built into the board.

All in all, he imagines the trip will cover roughly 4,500 miles and take him over 120 days to complete the journey– meaning he’ll paddle upwards of a marathon each day for 120 days straight if all goes according to plan. The waterman will start on the northern coast of Morocco before heading to the Canary Islands and Antigua, finally arriving in… Bienvenido a Miami!

The Route… Looks… Lengthy…

Bertish hopes the crossing will raise awareness and funds for three separate charities that include Operation Smile,  The Lunchbox Fund, and Signature of Hope Trust.
