A 38 year-old mountain biker is dead following a grizzly attack that occurred just west of the Glacier National Park boundary on Wednesday reports the Ravalli Republic.

The man, who was accompanied by a friend at the time of the accident, has been identified as US Forest Service law enforcement officer, Brad Treat. Treat and his friend were riding in the Halfmoon Lakes area of Flathead National Forest when they reportedly surprised a grizzly bear. The bear became aggressive, knocked Treat from his bike, and ultimately mauled the victim to death as his friend went for help.

Flathead County sheriff Chuck Curry commented on the tragic event saying, “Brad was an integral member of our area law enforcement team and a friend to us all.”

Grizzlies have been responsible for 10 deaths in Glacier National Park since its founding in 1910.

*Our deepest condolences go out to Treat’s friends and family.
