The East Coast could finally be catching a break as an expected change in the large-scale weather pattern over North America could bring to bring large snowstorms to the East beginning later in the week.

NAO-Figure1

The North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) had been positive since October before turning negative within the last few days. With the NAO going negative for the first time this season more cold air will begin to extend down from the north with the potential for a greater number of snowstorms.

Colder-than-average temperatures will span across portions of the East over the next two weeks which should also help with snow making.

Currently the exact timing of where and when these snowstorms may develop in the East is very unclear. But the new weather pattern is undoubtedly good news for us skiers and snowboarders.
