…As soon as we got off the boat my family and I drove up the Sunshine Coast to Egmont and went on a hike to the Skookumchuck Narrows. The hike reminded me of Jurrasic Park, no dinosaurs but lots of ferns.
The hour-long hike brought us to a roaring rapid in the ocean… The Skookumchuck Narrows are rapids caused by the tide, it’s really bad ass! I understand the concept but it’s still crazy to think that the ocean can cause rapids. When the tide is coming in the rapids go in that direction, it works both ways.
We got to see world-class kayakers playing in the holes.
The wave appears perfect for surfing or SUPing (stand up paddle boarding), but it’s not. Apparently below the rapid is a whirlpool that will suck you down like the kraken.
After ohh’ing, ahh’ing and thinking “I can do that” we started out hike back through the rainforest. The hike back to the car was full of freestyle walking as my brother and I kept trying to one-up each other with tree stalls, back flips and balancing acts.
The night came and we feasted on fresh seafood which forced us into a food coma, one of my favorite feelings.
The next day we woke early to get a boat traveling farther north. We then got on a water taxi that took us to Savary Island. This small island is also called the “little Hawaii of BC” as it’s filled with white sand beaches and palms.
After hanging on the beach and trying to catch crabs we made our way to the dock. As we waited we did flips off the dock.
The fam and I took the water taxi back and headed for Powell River where we would then catch another ferry to Vancouver Island. Two hours later we arrived on Vancouver Island and rushed to make the ferry for Denman Island.
Once upon a time my dad lived on Denman Island. This was the era of hippies, drugs and the Crosy Still and Nash motto “love the one you’re with” . Naturally he wanted to go check out the commune and bring back old clouded memories. The only problem was we ran out of gas on Denman Island and didn’t make it far.
After filling the car with gas we took the 10 minute ferry back to Vancouver Island drove to Nanaimo and, yep you guessed it, got yep another ferry back to Vancouver. We had a sushi dinner that couldn’t be beat and didn’t get up till the next morning when we got a flight back to Denver.
