There’s a very good chance you’ve never heard of Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, or at least have heard very little, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t significant. Most notably, this park is HUGE, like, 13.2 million acres huge. Sitting on the border of Canada, Wrangell-St. Elias begins at sea level and stretches up to 18,008 ft. Out of the 16 highest peaks in the United States, 9 are located in this national park, and it features Mount Wrangell, one of the largest active volcanoes in the world.
There’s a good chance, however, that you’ll never visit Wrangell-St. Elias National Park in your lifetime as, just like most of Alaska, it’s quite difficult to get to. But there’s around 100 people in this country who likely spend much more time in Wrangell-St. Elias than most. Why, you ask? Well, because they live there. Not just near the national park, not just on the border of the national park, inside the national park. That’s right, Wrangell-St. Elias features the last community residing inside a national park.
