This Is Why Groundhogs Are Called Whistle Pigs (Watch/Listen)

A Tik Toker was taking a hike in Rocky Mountain National Park recently when he heard a loud high-pitched noise that sounded like an emergency whistle.

Upon further investigation, he realized that the noise was actually coming from a couple of groundhogs sitting on a nearby rock. The sound is believed to be a way to warn other groundhogs in the area of danger.

It turns out that groundhogs are affectionally called ‘whistle pigs’ for obvious reasons. Sounds more like a smoke alarm that needs new batteries to me, but yeah you get the point.

Pay attention next time you’re out hiking. You might notice some whistle pigs giving you a friendly, ear-piercing greeting!

Fun fact, there’s a minor league baseball team in Princeton, WV called the WhistlePigs. Pretty great name, right?
