What Do Snow Pinwheels Mean For Avalanche Conditions?

The folks at the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center (GNFAC) in SW Montana were able to trigger pinwheels of snow indicating the recent new snow was moist due to warm temperatures and sunshine.  This is a telltale sign it will become wet and unstable with continued warmth and cause wet snow avalanches. If you’re headed into the Montana backcountry make sure to visit GNFAC website for all the latest avalanche, snowpack, and weather information HERE.
