Franklin, New Hampshire will soon be home to New England’s first whitewater park.
On Monday, a groundbreaking ceremony started construction of the eagerly anticipated Mill City Park at Franklin Falls. WMUR reports that excavation will begin today to start a swift process to open the park to the public in September. In spite of the rainy groundbreaking conditions, a large crowd showed up to celebrate the occasion that could revitalize the largely abandoned town of Franklin. The center of town is located next to the imposing Winnepasaukee River though, so it has always had the potential to be a haven for outdoorsy tourists. Some of the features that the park will include are an amphitheater, new whitewater features for competitions and recreation, a climbing wall, camping sites, water play areas for swimming, viewing areas, hiking and biking trails, and more.
Barring any setbacks, the Mill City Park at Franklin Falls will take fifteen weeks to construct, and will open in late September.
