The Powell Tribune is reporting that a man who wore a coonskin cap and carried an American flag to the edge of Old Faithful last year has received a sentence from a federal judge.

Aaron E. Merritt has been sentenced to more than two weeks in jail, fined $240, and banned from Yellowstone for 4 years.

A park ranger was dispatched on July 7th, 2020 after a report that Merritt had run out onto the thermal area near Old Faithful wearing a coonskin cap and waving an American flag. This, of course, is not allowed as the thermal area surrounding Old Faithful is protected under park rules.

On a personal note, as a blogger, I’m bummed that there isn’t a video of this idiot so I can further ridicule him for his behavior.

In the absence of a video I’ll ask this…

Why do stupid people keep showing up to Yellowstone National park to do stupid things? 😆

Maybe Yellowstone needs to ask some screening questions before guests enter the park. Here’s a few idea:

  1. Do you plan on acting like an ass during your visit?
  2. What would you do if you saw a bison, wolf, or bear in close proximity?
  3. Are you stupid? Do you think you could do something stupid while in the park?
