Members of the Sierra Club of Pennsylvania and New Jersey are pushing for the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area to become the region’s first national park according to the Pennsylvania Capital Star.
The members note that while the area has a ‘National Recreation Area’ status, it does not receive the same funding as a national park.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is visited by roughly 4 million people a year, which is on par with Yosemite and Yellowstone National Parks.
Advocates also note that the people who live in the tri-state of area of Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York have to travel hundreds of miles to reach a National Park.
The Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area is 70,000 acres of land in Pennsylvania and New Jersey bordering the Delaware River. The area is home to numerous waterfalls, plentiful hiking routes, and scenic mountains.
