Sailing Through Massive 6 Inch Thick Sheet of Pumice Stones In The South Pacific

“On August 9, 2019 we sailed through a pumice field for 6-8 hours, much of the time there was no visible water. It was like ploughing through a field. We figured the pumice was at least 6” thick.”

This massive sheet of pumice stones floating in the South Pacific toward Australia is the result of underwater volcanos dispersing the lighter than water rock. Some estimates have it covering an area of 58 square miles with an apron of abraded white ash in its wake more than three times that size.
