Trailer: Surf Doc ‘Momentum Generation’ Gets HBO Release Date

The surfing documentary Momentum Generation, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival earlier this year and chronicles the rise of many of the surfers who’ve defined the modern sport, now has a publicly-available trailer and an HBO premiere date of December 11.

From The Hollywood Reporter:

“Jeff and Michael Zimbalist are behind the feature, filmed over multiple years, that follows the world’s biggest surfers — Shane Dorian, Taylor Knox, Rob Machado, Pat O’Connell, Kalani Robb, Kelly Slater, Taylor Steele, Benji Weatherley and Ross Williams — as they reflect on the complexity of their brotherhood and competition that has shaped their journeys.”

The documentary covers the rise of the young surfers as they crash in a small house owned by a friend, giving them the freedom to pursue their shared passion.

Interestingly, a Rolling Stone review of the film quotes pro surfer, writer, film director and owner of the famous surf shack Benji Weatherley on the film’s importance to non-surfers:

“If you have an amazing group of people that are humble and grounded with the same goal in mind,” he says, “you can achieve anything.”
