An Australian newspaper reported on Monday that a couple of firefighters from down under were the target of potshots from crazy Americans with guns while helping battle wildfires in the Pacific Northwest. Unofficial then covered the story because, let’s be honest, it wouldn’t be the craziest things any American has heard in the last 30 seconds.

But now the Yakima County Sheriff’s office is saying that’s not exactly how things went down. Emily Schwing of Northwest Public Broadcasting reports the hunters had run afoul of the law (violating a closure order) and were guilty of being shitty shots (“they stated they had been shooting at the bear, but they missed multiple times”), but not of deliberately trying to pick off visiting firefighter/heroes.
