A new combination of select technologies will turn your smart phone into a satellite phone all at the push of a button, thus making adventures in the backcountry that much safer.

Take Jeremy Jones‘ word for it. Jones is a big backer of the ‘Somewear Global Hotspot,’ a device that allows users to communicate with contacts via their proprietary application and satellite communication networks. In worst case scenarios, Somewear can even put through an SOS call.

“In my profession, you learn quickly that if something goes wrong in the mountains you need reliable communication with emergency responders. Cell phones rarely work in the mountains which is why Somewear has become a critical part of my backcountry kit.”Jeremy Jones

The technology is rooted in satellite tech and as long as you have a clear view of the sky, you should be able to get a signal out to the network used by Somewear. Coverage is supposedly 100% global.

Perhaps the most revolutionary add-on is how the device’s Onboard GPS, pinpoints users location at every contact– ‘so that’s where they skied...’

The app also assesses local weather networks for relevant updates and/or warnings. Kickstarter supporters can get anything from 10% off their monthly data plan to a Somewear Global Hotspot depending on the level of commitment.
