Ski Hill Shoutout: Southern Utah’s Shangri-La, Brian Head Resort

Untracked pow, unreal views | Photo: Mike Saemisch

Brian Head is a ski hill with a big mountain backbone that’s located closer to Vegas than it is Salt Lake City. Simply put– it’s a weird spot in the best ways possible.

Positioned amidst a geological anomaly locals refer to as “The Giant Steps,” ‘The Head’ is a one-of-a-kind ski hill that’s more affordable than its neighbors to the north. Red rocks, super light snow, and some really interesting off-piste terrain makes Brian Head a must see for those skiers looking for an authentic ski experience.

Mogul mashers will relish runs like Giant Steps (*right beneath the main chairlift) while powder hounds can head to Devo’s Pitch, and Dark Hollow, both Utah classics in their own right. But the beauty of Brian Head is found in its terrain seperation that allows experts to be experts and novices to be novices.

Standing opposite its bigger brother Brian Head Peak, Navajo Peak serves the beginner and intermediate crowd while Brian Head Peak caters to experts. That division allows for a free-flowing ski experience not found at many ski areas across the United States.

And the fun doesn’t even begin to stop when the lifts close. Every Saturday evening, the resort hosts live music in its Last Chair Saloon,’ a quirky ski bar whose draft list includes strictly Utah-based breweries. That said, the bottled beers have a higher ABV (*this is Utah after all).
