In what will go down as the longest closure of hwy 89 within Lassen Volcanic National Park, road crews finally broke through a stubborn snowpack yesterday and now tourists can access the north-south thoroughfare.

According to a recently published article by USA Today, the new record beat out a 1931 closure that lasted into July. But after 4 months of clearing efforts– the road is now open. While many campsites along with the road will open for the first time this year, expect muddy conditions to persist as 10′ high snowbanks remain in parts of the park.
