The mountain biker and Forest Service officer who was the victim of a fatal Grizzly attack this past June had collided with the animal before experiencing the attack that would ultimately kill him reports say.
Brad Treat was biking fast down “The Outer Loop” trail in Flathead National Forest when he came around a blind embankment and crashed into the animal. His riding partner came up from behind shortly after, saw the bear standing over Treat, and ran for help. By the time help had arrived, Treat was dead. Neither himself nor his partner had bear spray at the time of attack. The bear attack is being considered by one University of Montana professor as a “surprise encounter” and not a “predatory” action.
