Authorities are on the search for the grizzly bear that knocked a U.S. Forest Service officer off his bike and killed him near Glacier National Park on Wednesday.
38 year old, Brad Treat, was riding with a friend on Highway 2 in Montana when the bear attacked. His friend managed to escape and returned with help but it was too late and Treat was pronounced dead on the scene. Since the attack the Green Gate/Half Moon trail systems have be shutdown as a precaution according to CNN.
DNA samples from the bear were collected at the scene by the Montana Department of Fish, Wildlife and Parks in an effort correctly identify animal before actions are taken.
Fish, Wildlife and Parks Warden Captain Lee Anderson issued this statement:
“We are attempting to capture and/or confirm the identity of the offending bear. When we have more information we will decide what actions to take.”
Brad Treat will be remembered as a dedicated law enforcement officer and public servant. The flag has been lowered to half mast at The Flathead National Forest office where he worked.
