Largest Ski Resort in South America Enveloped By Landslides

The popular Argentinian Ski Resort, Cerro Catedral, was enveloped by landslides following days of torrential rains. An avalanche of mud, rock and debris flowed down as part of the mountain collapsed under the saturation. No one has been reported injured from the slides, but property, including the hotel Pire Hue, has sustained damages.

Resort official said that increased stream flow, “caused the breakdown of natural reservoirs, transporting materials and saturating the available space shifting of water, damaging its bridges and culverts step.”

Cerro Catedral, located in Bariloche, is the largest and most popular ski resort in Argentina. There has been no word yet on how this will affect operations for the upcoming ski season.
