The Squaw Boys & Sea Otters in Cordova, AK

cordova, alaska

A few of the Squaw boys have found themselves in Cordova, Alaska.  We’re here to fly with Points North Heli, who just had 12 epic fly days in a row a coupla weeks back. We arrived to rain and clouds on Saturday and we are still hanging out in those conditions.

So what do you do in AK when you can’t ski?

Survival Suits:

We’ve been swimming in the survival suits they have here and hucking ourselves off the old pier.  The suits make you feel like a Tele-Tubby and it’s pretty tough not to roll around and laugh constantly.

Glacier Tours:

We just got back from the Sheraton Glacier.  The glacier is ablated at the bottom and you can just roam around and gawk into the huge holes and crevasses in it.  This is a very bizarre experience, especially if you’ve never seen a valley glacier before.

Downtown Cordova:

It turns out that there isn’t a whole lot going on in Downtown Cordova on Easter.  But you can grab a beer and be inundated by smoke from talkative chain-smoking local Alaskans.

Fishing:

A few of the clients here went fishing yesterday in a near by river.  They didn’t catch anything but Zen Vibrations.

Kayaking/Canoeing:

My friend, and NCAA Ski Racing Champion, Lindsey Mann, went out with her’s Pops and saw tons of sea otters, bald eagles, and puffins.

Sauna:

PNH has a sauna.  It’s just hot enough and the peer pressure is just vicious enough that you’ll jump into the freezing Alaskan ocean during these sweaty sauna sessions.

WildLife:

There’s sea otters swimming all over right in front of the compound all day and night. They’ve apparently infested this zone. There are plans to start spraying for them this summer.

Photo Hunting:

I’ve mostly just been cruising around with my camera taking pictures of all the decrepit architecture, sea-beaten boats, rain-soaked flora, towering mountains, nonchalant wildlife, spindly waterfalls, and seaweed-slathered coastline.

It’s looking like we’ll get to start flying tomorrow. Most the humans here are beyond fired up. I’m just scared.

More soon…
