Only 46 hours to Gaper Day! | Whistler 2012

May 25th, 2012 by

gaper day whistler 2011 whipeout 6 620x413

The countdown begins, and there’s only 2 days left to get locked and loaded for the most important event of 2012. Whistler Gaper day!

Even if you were there last year, you probably don’t remember it all that clearly. The party got messy with “Avant Ski” Starting things off at the Longhorn Saloon before people started heading up the hill, and it went into a pretty steep downward spiral after that.

Here’s a short motivational piece to get you all fired up to make 2012 the best Gaper Day yet!

Thanks to the guys at Doglotion for remembering to press record.

Nudity? Check.

Rocket Ski? Check

Get Gnar on a monoski? Check.

Pond skim? Check.

Have fun, be (relatively) safe, and remember, don’t take your skis or boards off until you get home, it will keep you from driving.

See you on the hill.

23BACKFLIPS – The New Guy at Squaw

April 17th, 2012 by

Howdy!

I’m Rob Thomas, the new reporter on the block here at UnofficialSquaw. I am now “Officially Unofficial”. Maybe I should trademark that. Someone could use it on a website years from now. I’d get all pissy and file a Cease and Desist order. Then things would just get all weird. Oh, Who am I kidding? That would never happen here in America. Freedom of speech, yada yada and all that right?!

One of my favorites at 3:38

To some this may be a trophy and to others a thorn. But, after all is said and done…I’m internet famous now and I want to share it with others. “23 Backflips” is a collection of clips that friends sent me over the years. The files just sit on my computer getting dusty. I needed to do something with them. They’re all different sizes and qualities. So, I threw them together and added a new clip of my own. Stir in a kickin’ soundtrack. Come on, you know you love it! Plus, this mishmash of clips may make a few friends happy to be internet famous also.

Practicing one of my signature moves!

Fun Facts:

  • Lives in Truckee, CA (moved from Mammoth)

  • Skier (out of control and lazy type)

  • New Home Turf (Squaw Valley and Alpine Meadows)

  • Class Clown (I love laughing until my face hurts)

  • Favorite Author is T.S. Geisel

*Many more fun facts available. Collect and win!

...and I've met local celebrities!

I’ve met some good folks during my time here so far and know there’s at least four or five more to meet. I’ve even met some people all the way from San Francisco. I may know you already and I say, “Hi friends!”. For those I haven’t met yet, I say, “Hi, I’m Rob. Nice to meet you (your name here).

-RT…

I included a bonus video too, oh yeah!

INTERNATIONAL G.N.A.R. DAY 2012 Tribute Video

March 20th, 2012 by

Unofficial Steamboat makes it to Squaw and makes tribute video, on international G.N.A.R. DAY 2012

Eight days ago I had the trip of a lifetime. I was able to venture out to this big place where the snow falls like rain and the women all look like Debbie Dutton… a little place called Squaw Valley! I was there with a group of teenagers from the Colorado Freeride Big Mountain Team. We just happened to be in Squaw on such a memorable day, International G.N.A.R. day! Without thinking of what to do in our free time, we were out filming a tribute video.

8am load on the KT-22

We were at Squaw for the Junior Freeskiing Tour. The venue for the competition was perfect for the young adults. There was multiple airs and many different line options. The north facing run, Enchanted Forest, held the snow and was hidden from the hot afternoon sun. The weather was glorious, bluebird and in mid 50′s for the most part (we left the day it started dumping).

The comp venue

Even with the current snow pack, the athletes and myself were stoked just to be at such a place. We all have seen G.N.A.R. and I grew up watching all the pros move to Cali and slay sick-gnasty lines in the Tahoe area. I think I was more excited to be at Squaw than the teenagers. The Tahoe area stole my heart and now I am in love. Hopefully next time mother nature will put out and show me the real Squallywood!

International Gnar Points | Austrians Getting After It, BN

January 20th, 2012 by

Gnarlberg Steinbocks, is a group of ripper out of Arlberg, Austria who know how to send it properly on the mountain and off.  This video won the Powder to the People Video Comp.  Word has it, Arlberg is known for being the place for your proper, clean cut, stereotypical Austrian.  This crew is showing the world that there is another, darker side.  There are some sick line thrown down and some high scoring GNAR points handed out for riding in the buff.  Keep your eye out as well. They are finishing their second, longer film that is coming out soon.

“I Want To Rock” was made in three days and all the riding was filmed in one day.   If you are not looking for any storyline and want to get straight to the riding, that starts about 1:30 or so.

VIDEO: Sh*t Snowboarders Say | Follow-up to Sh*t Skiers Say

After the viral video of “Sh*t Skiers Say,” here’s a follow up. Again, it’s right on the money. You can defend snowboarding or skiing as much as you want, but you have to admit each has there own share of faux pas. Good on these guys for pointing them out. “DRRRRROOOOPPPP!”
