A series of documents obtained by the Washington Post and Outside show how the current administration is hoping to almost completely reverse an Obama-era proclamation that designated Utah’s Bears Ears as a national monument,

The 1.35 million acre monument is co-managed by federal officials along with native American tribes who consider the area to hold religious and cultural significance. If the Trump administration’s wishes are met, that area could be cut down to just over 200,000 acres. The remaining monument would be a measly 15% of its original size.

Citing another leaked draft, The Washington Post is saying that the current administration hopes to also downsize Grand Escalante Staircase by nearly half. The two monuments would also be broken down into a series of smaller, interconnected monuments. The White House is expected to make an announcement on the future of these monuments on Monday.
