One of the leading economic drivers in Colorado is the sport of skiing reports a new study completed by Vail Resorts and Colorado Ski Country. The last time such a report was completed was a decade ago and at that time the ski industry accounted for $2.5 billion. The newest study shows that skiing creates $4.8 billion in what the Denver Post refers to as “economic activity” for the state of Colorado.

Along with that activity, the ski industry in Colorado currently employees 46,000 people throughout the state. Whether that be in rentals, serving food, or operations, Colorado’s unemployment rate would skyrocket if the snow suddenly disappeared.

And it’s not just the tourists bringing in the big bucks…

According to the study, 500,000 Colorado residents went skiing during the 2013/2014 season, which amounted to 5.6 million skier visits. The 2013/2014 season broke the record for skier visits at a total of 12.6 million!
