Mt. Baker Report from NOV. 15, 2015

This storm is sure delivering for Mt. Baker – we have another 15 inches of new snow this morning, which brings our base at Heather Meadows to 35 inches!

However, we are waiting for one last warm front to come through before we are able to make a call on an opening date.  Temperatures are expected to rise Monday evening with rain Tuesday.

Now that the moisture from the rain on Friday has drained out of the snow base, our crew will be out on the mountain tomorrow grooming the runs, setting up rope lines and prepping the mountain so we’ll be ready for immediate opening if we come through the forecasted rain in good shape.

We will assess the conditions Monday, get an updated forecast on the warm front and then make a tentative decision on a possible opening for Thursday Nov. 19th!

Opening Day:  Mt. Baker opens whenever we have enough snow base.  Since we rely on good old Mother Nature, and not on snowmaking machines, this means our opening date varies from year to year.  The average opening date for the last 15 years is Nov. 22nd.  We need between 20-30 inches of base (depending on the quality of the snow – heavy, compacted, light, etc.) at Heather Meadows to begin partial operation.
