A 19 year-old is dead after succumbing to injuries sustained in a 1,100′ fall near Beartooth Pass on the Montana-Wyoming border.

The young man, who has since been identified as Benjamin Fern Tesseneer of Bozeman, was hiking up a couloir on Saturday with his sister at the time of the accident. Reports indicate that his sister decided to stop part of the way up the chute while her brother continued upwards for approximately another 1,000′. So far it’s unclear what exactly caused the mishap but Tesseneer somehow lost his footing and fell down the couloir.

Nearby ski patrol from Beartooth Basin Summer Ski Area were called onto the scene where they would perform CPR for some 40 minutes. Those efforts would prove unsuccessful. Tesseneer was then air lifted with the help of Red Lodge Search and Rescue and Life Flight. The body was later turned over to the Park County Coroner’s office. Experts believe that the victim died from severe chest and head trauma.

*Our deepest condolences go out the victim’s friends and family.
