The murder was the result of Woolwine allegedly making “creepy” comments about a female coworker, Joan Noble to a teenager member of the crew. The teenager who heard the comments later told Rhynes what Woolwine had said and those words would ultimately reach Noble’s boyfriend and fellow coworker, Thomas Ertz. According to the teenage employee, the last time he saw Woolwine was when the three were driving towards the ski area’s maintenance shop. Ertz and Rhynes would leave the shop alive but Woolwine would not return.

In a later interrogation, Rhynes admitted to shooting Woolwine but says he only meant to shoot above his head in order to scare him, not kill him. He ultimately pleaded no contest to voluntary manslaughter.
