A mom was trying to save her 11 year-old son from Clear Creek when she appears to have hit her head and drowned.

The Denver Post is reporting that 31 year-old, Amber Raye Presson was trying to rescue her child from the swift currents of Clear Creek near downtown Golden, CO when she struck her head on rocks beneath the water’s surface.

Authorities extracted a unconscious Presson just east of 6th Ave. Paramedics and bystanders helped perform life saving efforts on the victim but those attempts would prove unsuccessful. A forthcoming autopsy has yet to determine the cause of death. The child emerged from the creek alive and is currently in the care of family members.

*Our deepest condolences go out to the victim’s friends and family.
