It’s a story we’ve seen played out in mountain towns again and again across the west. Big money comes in and starts throwing it around to the delight and dismay of locals.
Usually its just fancy cars with out of state plates or maybe purchasing the local coffee shop to maintain the illusion of a job but billionaire Robert Mercer wanted a bit more when he relocated from New York to Yuma County, Colorado. He wanted a badge.
Denver 7 reports that the Yuma County sheriff denies he had a quid pro quo arrangement Mercer that resulted in a new truck for the sheriff and bunch of crime fighting equipment like taser guns to join his sheriff’s posse that would allow him to go out on search and rescues, combat criminals, and carry a concealed weapon in any jurisdiction in the country.
There’s a bunch of back and forth between news organizations and Yuma County Sheriff’s Office about how exactly that pickup truck and weapons were funded and there’s no clear answer yet, but if you step outside the law in Yuma County you might just end up getting arrested by a certified billionaire. Crazy.
