As the state of Colorado and several areas across the country prepare for another weekend of winter weather, now is a great time to be reminded to slow down and increase following distance while out on the road.
This truck driver lost control while driving in what appears to be the Officer’s Gulch area between Frisco and Copper along Colorado’s Interstate 70 Mountain Corridor. The truck jackknifes pretty aggressively but the driver manages to stay mostly on the road and completely upright, maintaining the ability to drive away after the slide.
There’s a decent chance the truck still saw some damage, but the driver was likely fine (aside from probably being terrified), no other vehicles were involved, and the road wasn’t shut down. That’s basically the best you can ask for when it comes to losing control along I-70.
The incident is a reminder to the dangers of black ice along the road, a patch of ice on roadways or other transportation surfaces that’s often clear and not easily seen. Black ice is most common during the early hours after snow melt has had a chance to refreeze overnight, but it can also form when roadways are slick from rain and temperatures drop below freezing. It’s vital that you slow down and leave extra space between you and other vehicles during winter weather conditions along the road.
