Wildlife officers are seeking further information from the public in relation to the illegal killing of a mountain lion left in Taylor Canyon northeast of Almont, Colorado.
Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers responded to the location on Friday, November 21st, after a report came in of a dead mountain lion near the Gunnison City Mountain Park group campsites. A female cat had been shot through the chest and left in bushes.
“We are looking for leads or information anyone might have that could assist us with this investigation. Somebody killed this lion and then dumped its carcass in the place where it was discovered.” – CPW District Wildlife Manager Codi Prior
The animal was previously part of CPW’s mountain lion density study in the Gunnison Basin. It was poached out of season, discovered three days before the start of legal mountain lion hunting season in the state, and was not reported as killed in an act of self defense.
