A solo hiker was rescued after falling around 50 feet down the knife-edge between two Colorado mountains last week, surviving the fall with a broken wrist and pain in his leg.
According to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office, the man fell between Father Dyer Peak and Mt. Helen, two 13,000+ foot mountains just southwest of Breckenridge. He called for help after the fall, having pain in both wrists and his leg, though he was able to walk.
A team made up of deputies and the Summit County Rescue Group hiked into the field to meet the man, successfully extracting him from the field approximately 7 hours after the initial call. A friend then took him to the hospital for medical treatment.
Summit Post has the saddle between Father Dyer Peak and Mt. Helen classified as a Class 3 ridge scramble, stretching about 1.1 miles in one direction. Accessing the route is typically done by climbing the East Slopes route to the summit of Mt. Helen before continuing onto the ridge.
