Colorado Parks & Wildlife‘s recent release of their monthly Wolf Activity Area map shows that wolves have been reaching shockingly close to the Denver Metro Area.

The wolf activity map lays out which watersheds collared wolves have been detected in throughout the state. The most recent iteration marks activity between May 27th, 2025 and June 25th, 2025, and at least one collared wolf was marked in a watershed that stretches into the Denver Metro Area.

As the map is based solely on watersheds, it’s not clear exactly how close the animal got to the city, but it was nonetheless somewhat nearby. A highlighted watershed does not mean a wolf or wolves traveled throughout or are present throughout an entire watershed.

Watersheds, or Hydrologic Unit Codes, are geographic units that drain water into a specific waterbody. Hydrologic unit maps are created for a majority of the country.

At least one wolf was also noted in multiple watersheds within Boulder County and plenty of other watersheds around the state.
