Mt. Washington, New Hampshire — If you really want to ski on snow in New Hampshire in June, there are usually two places to do that. The first option is Tuckerman Ravine, but it has minimal snowpack by June, and there are various hazards that factor into skiing and riding.
The Snowfields are the other option. Situated below Mt. Washington’s summit, this white patch holds onto snow into June. Reddit user TheRealBrokenBrains was having a great run and was cruising his way down. In what he described as a “rookie mistake,” the skier didn’t realize he was nearing the end of the snowpatch, resulting in the individual crashing into rocks below. It appears that he made it without any major injuries, but the video below shows how risky the Snowfields can be if you crash.
Ultimately, while not as steep as Tuckerman Ravine, the Snowfields have their own share of challenges. There are rocks all over the place, and the snow surface is a bit harder than you may think. It’s a lot steeper than some may assume, which means the hike back up is challenging as well. If you do want to get some skiing there, do your research and be prepared for the unexpected.
