As the weather continues to warm and we get deeper and deeper into spring, hundreds of skiers and snowboarders will make the trip to Tuckerman Ravine in New Hampshire to test their skills in the legendary proving grounds. With several serious hazards and features, the bowl has earned itself the title of the “birthplace of extreme skiing in the U.S.”
The ravine’s multitude of springtime hazards and steep incline can lead to serious injury or worse for those who fall or lose control on the snow. The skier in the following video fortunately doesn’t appear to be injured, though they were likely forced to make a not-so-enjoyable walk back down the run to retrieve their lost ski.
Tuckerman Ravine’s multitude of springtime hazards include icefalls and rockfalls, glide cracks, undermined snow, wet avalanches, and refrozen snow surfaces. The area should be approached and ridden with caution and an understanding that, though popular, it is still a remote backcountry area.
