How early is too early to ski on Mount Washington? My own personal belief is if there’s snow coverage and there’s essentially no avalanche danger, it’s not too early to ski on Mount Washington. The base of your skis might disagree, but that’s what the ski tuner is there for.
Connor and Colby in the video below decided that November 26 was plenty deep enough into the ski season to get a little ski tour of Tuckerman Ravine going, despite a drizzly, wintery mix falling from the sky and less-than-ideal snow conditions covering the ground. Nonetheless these guys made it up and got some turns in, and we praise them for it.
They skied the left gully, the route furthest to the looker’s left that’s still properly inside Tuckerman Ravine. There are plenty of other routes down within and around the ravine that people ski every year. If you’re going to ski in the backcountry, if you’re going to head up onto Mount Washington in winter weather, it’s incredibly important that you prepare for the conditions and understand the threat and reality of avalanches on the mountains. Do not go into the backcountry without the proper gear and training.
