Dallas, Texas – Could a random 1990s meetup at a ski rental shop foreshadow a future NFL hiring?
Back in 2019, the Cowboys were preparing to face the Patriots. The Shan & RJ show on 105.3 The Fan interviewed Jerry Jones (the owner of the Dallas Cowboys) the week before the matchup to talk about football. During the discussion, Jerry Jones recalled a ski trip back in the 1990s (likely in 1996) that happened following the conclusion of the NFL season. He was picking up gear for his grandkids at a ski rental shop when he ran into Bill Belichick. Bill was just fired from the Cleveland Browns (which became the Baltimore Ravens) and told Jerry to keep his name in mind if any openings came up.
Jerry didn’t end up hiring Bill, which was a major regret. After an interesting stint with the Jets, Bill became the head coach of the New England Patriots in 2000. The rest is history: six Super Bowls, nine AFC championships, and many players and coaches doing their jobs. Bill’s tenure with New England ended this year following a disappointing stretch of seasons. Jerry Jones has struggled to compile a Super Bowl contender since the glory days of the ’90s, with their last Super Bowl being in 1996.
It seems like Bill Belichick will return to coaching next year, but the question is where. The Cowboys appear to be an option, as their head coach, Mike McCarthy, may be on the hot seat. A move to the Cowboys’ divisional rivals, the Giants (where Bill formerly coached) and the Eagles, also seems possible.
