MOUNT WASHINGTON, New Hampshire – Tuckerman Ravine is not for the weak. The legendary slope has become a pilgrimage for New England skiers, but if you’re not strong enough to ski the slope, it can take you out hard core. It’s hard to properly understand how steep and intense the ravine is, but this brutal wipeout illustrates it pretty well.
“Hiking Tuckerman’s Ravine on Mount Washington in New Hampshire along the Chute. A friend and I are standing behind the boulder to avoid oncoming sluff. I was filming for really no reason other than to capture the size of sluff coming down the hill. Then, this guy cuts in between us for, at the time, I thought no reason. That was not the case…
Two seconds later, a helpless girl comes flying face first down the mountain at a barreling speed (40-45 MPH) on a 55 degree slope. Roughly 150 pounds of woman, clothing and ski gear rifles down the hill and continues to take out on an unsuspecting hiker.“
The way the snow just keeps tumbling nonstop, and then, of course, the fallen skier ripping past face first, really puts into perspective how steep Tuckerman Ravine really is. It’s not confirmed to be true, but one commenter claims to be the fallen girl in the video. She claims she was mostly okay, walking away with just a busted elbow. Very lucky if that’s true.
