Surfing the waves of Vancouver Island.
Surfing the waves of Vancouver Island.

VANCOUVER ISLAND, British Columbia – Surfer Keenan Bush embarked into the remote temperate rainforest of Vancouver Island in search of some rippable waves, and he found them. Now obviously they weren’t massive or huge barrels, but they were there, and their remoteness makes them even more impressive.

Embarking from a remote location in the wilderness we follow a gnarly overgrown trail through pristine and ancient old growth rain forest, crossing bogs and streams on fallen log bridges before finally arriving at our destination: A fun rippable little wedge wave breaking in the middle of nowhere.

Vancouver Island is a temperate rainforest. Actually, it’s part of a temperate rainforest. The large band along the west coast runs from California up to Alaska, and while it isn’t entirely rainforest, a large chunk of it is. Obviously we aren’t talking about a rainforest like the Amazon or the Congo. While tropical rainforests are found closer to the equator, a temperate rainforest is further away and found near coastal waters.
